Estepona's folk heritage is similar to that of the whole of Andalusia and in essence
presents similar characteristics.
Even to this day, very late of an evening, it is possible to hear the haunting sound of
one of the most spontaneous and pure forms of flamenco song, the "Cante Hondo".
The variety of flamenco with the most popular following can still be heard in the
town today if sometimes unquestionably affected by elements of sophistication. The
local Flamenco Club is especially worthy of a mention for is efforts in promoting this
art form, organizing several competitions throughout the year, some of which are
renown throughout the country.
As a curiosity we should add that the Esteponan Fandango, in its two manifestations
of song and dance, is preserved in an ancient and local form of the "verdiales
malagueños"; dances of great artistic beauty.
