THE SUGAR REFINERY
Located in the Barriada del Ingenio - Century XIX.
The installation of a sugar refinery, which did away with the high costs of transporting the sugar cane to Malaga was vital. In order to achieve this, the Marqués del Duero chose a site to build the refinery at some 500 m from the town, facing the road leading to Estepona.
The refinery, opened towards the end of 1670, and was known popularly as "El Ingenio", and lent its name to the present district of San Pedro.
The industrial estate also housed wine cellars which produced a "muscatel" wine of high quality and a refinery, La Alcoholera, which currently houses the Mechanical Art Museum.
