THE TRAPICHE OF GUADAIZA (THE MODEL FARM)

Location: Prolongation Avenida Oriental - XIX Century

The Trapiche de Guadaiza is probably the first industrial building in San Pedro Alcántara, prior to the Marqués del Duero. It was a sugar factory forming part of the estate on the land purchased by the Marqués to form part of the colony in 1857.

Gutiérrez de la Concha commenced his project for the Model Farm in 1860, which was never built because, according to the Government, it was too expensive.

As an alternative solution, the reform of the old Trapiche was proposed, fitting it out to fulfill in so far as possible the original project.

Thus an interior division into various rooms was carried out; rooms for theory classes, laboratory, kitchen, dining-rooms and store. On the upper floor, the bedrooms and infirmary. A building constructed later on would house the industrial installations; dairy, cheese-making plant, distillery and press.

The Trapiche became too small to carry out so many tasks, which meant that the Model Farm was only provisional.

The confrontation between the Marqués and the Government meant the end of the project and the latter dismantling of the installations.
